Ellen Jean Karnes, ABR
As a child and young teen, perhaps because we moved around so often due to my dad’s career in the Air Force, I was fascinated with housing . . . floor plans, room layouts, decorating, riding the back roads looking at old houses, and dreamed of home ownership one day.
We moved from California to Northern Virginia when I was 14, and I attended Broad Run HS in Loudoun Co., followed by Madison College (now JMU) in Harrisonburg, VA. Tom and I met during college, and we purchased our first “fixer-upper” in Staunton, VA in 1982. We then came back to Bedford County, where Tom was born and raised, and built our second home in 1986.
After teaching at both Staunton River Middle and High Schools (7th grade History/Civics and Family and Consumer Science for grades 9-12), I chose in 2007 to leave the classroom and embark on a new career as a real estate agent with Olde Colony Realty in Vinton; those were 10 wonderful years!
Tom and I still live in Bedford Co., in the home we built, and about 15 minutes from the office. We enjoy our three grandchildren who live just across the driveway in the Goodview Elementary school district. I’m also very active with our church nearby and, when time permits, also enjoy “glamping” with friends, cooking, sewing, painting, and yard work.
